Innovation Weeks

The Sweden-Brazil Innovation Weeks

The Sweden-Brazil Innovation Weeks provide a platform for the Strategic Partnership between Sweden and Brazil within the areas of science, technology and innovation (STI). The purpose is to promote Sweden as a long-term innovation partner for Brazil by fostering Swedish innovation environments, establishing collaboration with Brazilian counterparts and creating a meeting place for Swedish and Brazilian actors in the STI area. The innovation weeks also provide an overview of Swedish STI activities in Brazil. The innovation weeks are furthermore a platform for trade promotion and a possibility to explore, discover and analyze new business and cooperation opportunities between Sweden and Brazil. The Sweden-Brazil Innovation Weeks are organized by Team Sweden Brazil – Embassy of Sweden, Business Sweden, Swedcham and the Swedish Honorary Consulates mainly in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.

In 1999 Sweden and Brazil signed a Strategic Partnership and Bilateral Agreement for cooperation in the areas of innovation and industrial high-technology. This partnership took an important step further when Brazil in October 2014 decided to acquire the Swedish Fighter Jet system Gripen NG. The Gripen project will be a close, strategic industrial relationship between Sweden and Brazil for the next 25-30 years and will entail cooperation in a wide range of sectors not limited to defense. The Gripen cooperation will also bring about exchanges in human capital in both directions.

The Sweden-Brazil Innovation Weeks are an annual umbrella activity organized by Team Sweden Brazil and coordinated by the Embassy of Sweden in Brasília.
The organization is composed by various innovation related events taking place during two weeks in different cities in Brazil on a number of horizontal issues as well as key sectoral themes such as aeronautics, sustainable cities, forestry, mining etc.
Other events are admitted through an application process and selected by Team Sweden. The Innovation weeks’ website is an administrative and organizational tool.

To participate in the Sweden-Brazil Innovation Weeks each event has to:

  1. contain a component of innovation; technological, social, institutional, or other;
  2. involve a collaboration between Swedish and Brazilian actors;
  3. comprise a defined activity, which could be either open or closed to the public.

Interested parties that fit the above criteria and are interested in participating under the umbrella of the Sweden-Brazil Innovation weeks are welcome to submit a formal application to the Embassy of Sweden in Brasilia. The application should specify purpose, organizers, intended participants, as well as the time and place for the planned event. The text shall be in English and Portuguese and written in a format so that it could be posted on the Innovation weeks’ website, i.e. no longer than half an A4-page. The Embassy has no funding for individual events so funding has to be arranged.

For any event formally participating in the Sweden-Brazil Innovation Weeks Team Sweden will spread invitations through its’ networks, post information on the website and disseminate information about the event through social media. It is therefore welcomed that organizers provide the Embassy with texts, tweets, photos and video clips before and during the event.

After the event the organizer should submit a summary of the event, in a format similar to the above, no longer than two weeks after the event has been concluded.

Sweden and Brazil has a well-established and long-term trade, investment and innovation relation.

The 1st Innovation Week was arranged in May 2012 in Rio de Janeiro focusing on Innovation and Sustainable Development. The Embassy of Sweden showed the exposition “Sweden – The Innovative Way” at the Centro Cultural do Banco do Brasil in Rio de Janeiro. The following year, in May 2013 during the visit of the Swedish Minister for Enterprise Annie Lööf, the 2nd Innovation Week was arranged. Last year, when the 3rd Innovation Week was arranged the date was changed to November in order to combine the event with CISBs yearly Brazilian Swedish Workshop in Aeronautics and Defense. In 2015, the 4th Innovation Week and the event expanded both in time and number of sectors, and will cover two weeks. In 2016, a greater number of cities took part of the 5th Innovation Weeks and had 3 new sectors added: Autonomous Systems, Forestry, and Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). Vice-minister Oscar Stenström inaugurated the week and participated in a number of activities. 2017 will be the sixth edition of the Sweden-Brazil Innovation Weeks.
